They wear black kimonos known as shihakushō and carry swords known as zanpakutō.
They belong to an organisation known as the Gotei 13, which exists in the afterlife known as Soul Society. They guide lost souls known as Plus(es) to the Soul Society and purify creatures, known as Hollow(s), that devour the souls of both living and dead humans. They assume the role of balancers, ensuring that the number of souls are balanced between Soul Society and the world of the living.
Their combat abilities can be divided into four basic categories known as zankensōki - zanjutsu, hakuda, hohō, and kidō. However, the mastery of each depends on the personality and abilities of the individual.
Unless remarkably sensitive to the paranormal, most humans will not be able to see them.
